Instrument that measures luminous intensity,
especially relative intensities from
different sources. Bunsen's grease-spot
photometer 1844 compares the intensity of a
light source with a known source by each
illuminating one half of a translucent area.
Modern photometers use photocells, as in a
photographer's exposure meter. A
photomultiplier can also be used as a
photometer.
